For the correction of the most extreme levels of nearsightedness and astigmatism, the procedure of choice is the implantation of a contact lens-like material inside the eye. Unlike cataract surgery or Refractive Lens Exchange surgery, the natural lens is not removed; rather, the implant sits in front of the natural lens. In effect, the contact lens implant becomes an internal contact lens. The EVO ICL is an additive lens, meaning the natural lens is not removed from the eye.

This outpatient procedure (known as “phakic IOL implantation”) or the EVO ICL can be performed under topical (eye drop) anesthesia and can be used to correct from -3 up to -20 diopters of nearsightedness and 4 diopters of astigmatism. Patients with less severe refractive errors may be considered for the EVO ICL if the cornea is too thin for laser vision correction (ie: LASIK or PRK).
For patients with refractive errors outside of this range (ie: too much nearsightedness or astigmatism), the EVO ICL procedure may be combined with LASIK in a procedure called Bioptics which also offers excellent visual results. While we have been working with and implanting phakic IOLs in a research capacity since 1996, the FDA’s initial phakic IOL approval did not come until 2004.
The EVO ICL procedure takes about 10 to 15 minutes, does not hurt, and is accompanied by a quick visual recovery (similar to LASIK). Most patients are able to return to work the day after their EVO ICL procedure.
Dr. Davidorf has been working with and implanting various phakic IOLs in a research capacity since 1996, subsequently participating in the FDA Clinical Trial of the ICL for Hyperopia. The FDA’s initial phakic IOL approval came in 2004, with the EVO ICL gaining approval for its toric (astigmatism correcting) model in 2018. The EVO ICL received FDA approval in March of 2022.
While many lens powers are available with the EVO ICL, sometimes, depending on your prescription, these special lenses may need to be custom-made. In such cases, it usually takes about six weeks to receive the custom-made EVO ICL – so please plan ahead. Please plan ahead if you think you may be a candidate for the EVO ICL procedure!
