Did you know that the average American spends five hours a day on their mobile device? And most Americans spend their days working on a laptop or computer.
It is unclear what effect this kind of screen time will ultimately have but it does put you at greater risk for something called eye strain.
Eye strain is a common condition that causes fatigue, lowers productivity, and causes general irritation. However, there are steps you can take to protect your eyes and minimize the effects of eye strain. Let’s look at four ways you can prevent eye strain:
1.Take regular breaks from computers and digital devices
Frequent breaks are one of the best ways to prevent eye strain. When you are spending long periods of time working on a computer or digital device, try to stop regularly to let your eyes rest. You don’t even have to leave the room; this could just mean giving your eyes a minute to look away and gaze out the window.
2. Minimize the glare from your screen
Try to minimize the glare from your computer screen anyway possible. Try to read from an actual book as opposed to an iPad.
Use anti-glare filters on your laptop or computer monitor. And make sure the sunlight is not reflecting off of your digital devices causing a glare as well.
3. Try to remember to blink
Okay, if you’re like most people you probably almost never think about blinking. However, blinking is very important for your eyes; it helps keep them from becoming dry and irritated.
But when people work on a computer or digital device they blink far less often than they normally would. It may feel awkward but try to remember to take regular breaks and blink slowly. This will help moisten your eyes and prevent dryness.
4. Get regular comprehensive eye exams
And of course, the best way to prevent or manage eye strain is by having regular comprehensive eye exams. Let your doctor know how much time you spending working on digital devices. Let them when what your office setup is like and how close you sit to your computer screen.
